A spot is not a stain. A spot is material sitting on the fibre and it comes out with the right solution; a stain has bonded to the fibre or replaced its dye, and no amount of general-purpose cleaner will lift it. Treating one like the other is what sets a stain permanently.
Every treatment starts the same way: inspect to find what caused it, test the carpet for colourfastness before anything is applied, then apply sparingly and tamp — never rub. The solution gets two to three minutes of dwell time to do the work, and then it is extracted rather than left in the pile.
That is the difference between removing a stain and moving it. It is also why we are called in after someone else has tried.
Kool-Aid, children’s red medicine, fruit punch, decaffeinated coffee. Treated with a reducing agent and controlled heat transfer, checked every 20 to 30 seconds so the carpet dye is not pulled with the stain.
Urine, coffee, mold, wood tannin. An oxidiser is applied and left to work; it self-neutralises rather than leaving a residue that attracts new soil.
Blood, egg, chocolate. An enzyme-active spotter softens the contaminant first — scrubbing a protein stain sets it into the fibre.
Ink, grease, cosmetics, adhesives, gum, tar. Order matters: the spotter goes on BEFORE the solvent, which stops the dissolved pigment wicking down into the backing and out into clean fibre.
Rust, yellowing, water stains. Rust needs an acid; yellowing and water marks often respond to the oxidiser instead. Guessing between them is how a small mark becomes a large one.
Most of the time nobody knows what caused it. That is not a problem — it just changes the order of work.
Start with the neutral spotter and agitate. If the stain is releasing, keep going and rinse. If it is not, move to the solvent, agitate, and watch again. Still there, and the origin has narrowed itself down: what remains is either a synthetic dye or an organic one, and testing a small area decides which.
That sequence exists so the aggressive chemistry is the last thing tried rather than the first. Reaching for it early is what sets a stain permanently, and it is the single most common way a spot gets made worse before we are called.

Before any product, the sequence is what saves the carpet — and it is the same whatever was spilled.
On wool, one addition: a neutral pH wool-safe spot cleaner only, then blot dry. Wool holds dye to the core of the fibre, so the wrong chemistry does not leave a mark — it removes the colour.
Red dye is the stain most often made permanent by someone trying to help, and the reason is that it is not really a stain.
Ordinary soil sits on or in the fibre and can be lifted off it. Red dye bonds. The colourant in sports drinks, children’s fruit drinks, some medicines and a great deal of food is a dye, and carpet fibre is exactly what dyes are designed to attach to permanently. The carpet has been re-dyed, in a small patch, by accident.
No amount of washing removes a dye that has taken. The colour has to be chemically broken down instead, which is why the product is a reducer rather than a detergent — and why we use a one-step product rather than the conventional two-part kind, which under time pressure gets mixed wrong. Heat further accelerates the chemical action, which is why the professional method drives the reaction rather than waiting and hoping.
Red reducers are for synthetic carpet and fabrics. Not wool. A chemical designed to break a dye bond does not distinguish between the spill’s dye and the carpet’s own. On wool it does not remove a stain — it removes the colour. If there is any doubt about the fibre, that doubt has to be resolved before the bottle comes out of the bag.
A second category resists water-based cleaning entirely, because none of it is water soluble: paint, ballpoint pen, stamp pad, duplicating, marking, writing and felt tip inks, coloured art inks, shoe polish, cosmetics and adhesives.
It is not a question of effort or dwell time. A general spotter cannot dissolve ink, so nothing is removed — but the moisture and agitation spread it, and an ink mark worked at with water typically grows from a spot to a halo.
The product for this category is a non-volatile multi-purpose solvent, and both parts of that matter. Non-volatile means it does not flash off in seconds, so it stays on the stain long enough to dissolve it and puts less vapour into an occupied building. Multi-purpose matters because in practice nobody knows exactly what the mark is.
The useful property is that it is both water soluble and solvent soluble. Most of the time the stain comes out by applying the product, adding water and extracting — ordinary equipment, ordinary process. Where solvents are more appropriate, the same product is flushed with a volatile solvent instead. Ink deposits previously thought permanent come out this way, including heavy deposits on upholstery where other products had failed.
Rinse afterwards. Solvent residue left in the pile attracts soil, which turns a removed stain into a grey patch a fortnight later.
Carpet spot removers are designed to remove spots, not stains. Once a substance has been left to bond with the fibre, the products in a building’s cupboard are no longer the right tool, and repeated attempts are what make a treatable mark permanent.
The rule we train into building staff is simple and it saves more carpet than any product: a mark that has resisted two correct attempts gets logged, not escalated. Almost every permanent stain we are called to began as a removable one that somebody kept working on.
Left alone, a great many of these are still recoverable. A red spill that has been scrubbed with the wrong product frequently is not.
